Chapter 1 · Lesson 1 of 4
What Is a Large Language Model (LLM)?
A Very Good Guesser
A large language model (LLM) is a program trained on huge amounts of text. During training it learns one core skill: given some text, predict what comes next.
When you chat with an LLM, it writes its reply one small piece at a time, each time picking a likely next piece based on everything before it. That simple loop, repeated very fast, produces answers, stories, and code.
So an LLM is not a database looking up facts. It is a pattern engine that generates text that sounds right based on what it has seen.
